NEW MEXICO SECRETARY OF STATES: Bipartisan State Canvassing Board Orders Automatic Recount in House District 20, Sets Date for Certification of Recount Results

New Mexico Secretary of State issued the following announcement on Nov. 30.

New Mexico’s State Canvassing Board – comprised of Governor Susana Martinez, Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, and Chief Justice Judith Nakamura – met today in Santa Fe and officially ordered an automatic recount of the House District 20 general election results.

Following New Mexico law, automatic recounts in House Districts 20, 22, and 63 have been ordered by the State Canvassing Board because the vote margin between the top two candidates in each contest is less than one-percent (NMSA 1978 §1-14- 24(A)).

In House District 20, Abbas Akhil received 5,896 votes (50.49%% of the total) and Jim Dines received 5,781 votes (49.51% of the total).

The automatic recount process for House District 20 will begin on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 and will be administered by the county clerk of the county which comprises the district (Bernalillo). The automatic recount process for House District 22 will begin on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 and will be administered by the county clerks of the counties which comprise the district (Bernalillo, Sandoval, and Santa Fe).

The automatic recount process for House District 63 will begin on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 and will be administered by the county clerks of the counties which comprise the district (Curry, De Baca, Guadalupe, Roosevelt, and San Miguel).

Secretary Toulouse Oliver has created a web page where the public can view the recount results as the involved counties complete their portion of the recount. The official, certified results for all other contests in the 2018 general election can be found here.

In addition to ordering the House District 20 recount today, Monday, December 10, 2018 at 8:30AM MST was set as the date for the Board to reconvene and certify the results of the three automatic recounts.
